Next stop: Zhangye<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]As we moved west, following the Silk Road, it was time to take advantage of China’s excellent high speed rail system. Lanzhou to Xhangye, a distance of over 300 miles, took less than three hours. Most westerners probably know Xhangye (if they’ve heard of it at all) as being home to the Danxia Geopark, or the Rainbow Mountains of Instagram fame. The section we visited included the Thirty-three Heaven Grottoes, seen above carved into the cliff face. An opening in the cliff allowed for one last view of the golden buddha, and once inside the temple you could see several other carved figures. Reading about the site online, it appears that the Pagoda Forest and Qianfo Grottoes areas are equally impressive. But, we only had time for a taste and we needed to move on. As a guide on my first trip to China said, we were “viewing the flowers from a galloping horse.” That’s always been one of my favorite phrases from China as it aptly describes the press trip form of travel. There’s always so much to see and so little time in which to see it. These trips move fast and next up in Zhangye would be the Rainbow Mountains, one of the landscape darlings of the internet.
