We were bound for Dunhuang which would be our last stop on this exploration of China’s Silk Road. This ride was about four and a half hours and would take us near the western edge of Gansu. You might think that we would be nearing the western border of China by now but there is still the entire, large province of Xinjiang to our west. You’d have to cross that before arriving in Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. China is massive.<\/p>\n

We’d visit another night market and have a barbecue dinner upon arrival, and in the morning we’d see the nearby Mogao Caves — somewhat similar to the grottoes we’d seen two days before in Zhangye, but a larger complex with better preserved cave interiors.<\/p>\n

From the UNESCO website<\/a>: “Situated at a strategic point along the Silk Route, at the crossroads of trade as well as religious, cultural and intellectual influences, the 492 cells and cave sanctuaries in Mogao are famous for their statues and wall paintings, spanning 1,000 years of Buddhist art.”<\/p>\n

The photo above shows a distant view of some of the least developed caves just to give some context to the landscape. Caves continued to be built at the site until the 14th century and often include paintings of those who commissioned them.<\/p>\n

As you can see, the touristed section is much more developed. The cliff face has been reinforced and steel doors have been added to most of the small caves that hold the delicate sculptures and murals. Unfortunately, as had become commonplace on this particular trip, photography was not allowed inside the caves. We did, however, visit a museum on our way out of the site that had some very well done recreations of some of the caves and you could photograph those. I’ll include some of those later in this post, but be aware that any interiors you see here are NOT the actual, original caves.<\/p>\n

There were many visitors but we were split up into much smaller groups, each with their own guide. Groups were maybe 12-15 people and it would quickly become clear why the limitation. The caves are not large. Some were tiny. It’s a little frustrating as a photographer that the most photogenic elements are not allowed to be photographed, but every place has their rules and we should all follow them. I’ve seen far too many people ignore rules as if they were only in place for others, but that disrespects everyone. Best we all follow the guidelines set out and, in this case, it was fortunate that the museum provided such good replicas. I imagine the day might come when tourism is considered too damaging to the murals altogether and the replicas may be all we are allowed to see.
