Photographing live performances<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]After our morning spent exploring the Mogao Caves, we were supposed to visit the Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake but winds picked up to 30 mph and a sandstorm interrupted those plans. At least the storm would not prevent us from seeing the \u201cAncient Sound of Dunhuang\u201d performance that evening. The show “aims to revive the ancient musical instruments and music scores by interpreting the murals and ancient scriptures in the Mogao Caves… using modern technology, such as lighting, installations and video images.” The show tells the story of a young man who “passionately pursues art and ultimately discovers the true essence of music within the Dunhuang musical murals.” These quotes are from the China Xian Tour website<\/a>\u00a0but it sums up the premise much better than I could have.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]I’ve learned from previous trips to never miss out on an opportunity to attend a performance in China. What may be described as a small, cultural performance will often be an elaborate spectacle the likes of which you would never have imagined.<\/p>\n

To be prepared to photograph an event like this is challenging. I try and collect as much information as I can ahead of time. How large will the space be? Is there a single stage? Will I be able to move around during the performance? All these are questions I might typically ask but I’ve found that guides are often reluctant to provide answers. I think this comes from their experience with regular tourists and not the travel press. They don’t want to tell too much because they don’t want to spoil any surprises and ruin the experience. Such was the case this time and, despite my repeated questions, my guide — excellent though he was — wouldn’t divulge any information other than that photography WAS allowed. I tried to prepare as much as I could, realizing that I’d have to improvise.<\/p>\n

Based on past experience, I assumed the show was going to be big. I decided to take only my Nikon D850 with my 70-200mm lens. I thought that would allow me to stay behind the audience and still get fairly tight shots of the stage. This was not a closed performance — many people had purchased tickets and I didn’t want to prevent them from enjoying the show.<\/p>\n

Before the show began, the audience gathered in a large open room with all kinds of backgrounds and CGI opportunities for selfies. Cast members also came out and posed for photos.<\/p>\n

Finally, a large doorway opened up and the crowd pushed into another large space where an immersive performance began. The action would lead us through a number of spaces where more performers were recreating the Mogao murals. The auditorium wasn’t quite full, so I had some empty seats beside and in front of me. The 70-200 had been a good choice because this let me be behind and above the audience and still have an unobstructed view of the stage.<\/p>\n

The stage had layers of screen where different elements could be projected with dancers appearing both in front of and behind the screens. It was a very immersive feeling with a lot of depth being created by the stage design. Occasionally the actors\/dancers would even move into the audience or fly above it by wire as they represented the flying Apsaras (celestial beings from Buddhist culture).[\/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”7793″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n

PHOTOGRAPHY NOTES:<\/h4>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]I’m still coming to terms with how good high ISO performance is on digital cameras these days, not to mention noise reduction technology in post processing. My brain was hard wired from film days when ISO 400 was about the highest you ever wanted to use — 800 if you were desperate. Anything beyond that was a grainy mess.<\/p>\n

I started shooting this show at ISO 5,000, which was already really high for me. Outside of my comfort zone. But the first shot above with the four dancers and the screens was shot wide open at f\/2.8 and my shutter speed was a ridiculously slow 1\/15th of a second. Credit to the VR on my Tamron zoom for keeping that image sharp. It should not have possible at such a slow speed.<\/p>\n

From this point on, I went to ISO 10,000 and felt like a daredevil. I know this is not unknown territory for a lot of photographers, but I’m almost always at the minimum ISO of 64 or 100. The results were phenomenal, though, and I was getting shutter speeds more like 1\/250th or even 1\/1000th of a second. Noise was not bad straight out of camera and using Lightroom’s new noise reduction features I could remove it altogether. Crazy how good high ISO has gotten. (I think?) The resulting effect was that of a woman dancing with a ghost. The veil would rise and fall and the dancer would at times interact with it. And for photographers, your tip today is to not be afraid of high ISOs. I can only speak to Nikon (and a bit for Fuji) but the technology has come so far that it’s crazy. Next time I’m in dark situation I’m not going to hesitate to crank that ISO up.
