I wanted to use the time to get adjusted to the time zone and take the opportunity to play with my new(ish) Fujifilm cameras. I’ve taken the X100VI and the X-Pro 3 to Iceland, China and Spain now, but still don’t feel totally in control of them yet.

The problem is, when I’m on assignment or a hosted tour in a place I’ve not been before, I tend to fall back on my tried and true gear. Gear that I know so well that I can use it without thinking. But, when I have a few moments on my own, I do like to get one of the Fujis out and play a bit. I have to say, their compactness and portability are easy to fall in love with.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”8557″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1792498149587{margin-top: -15px !important;}” text_direction=”default”]

Madrid’s Plaza Mayor with the Fujifilm X100VI and its built-in 23mm lens.

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”15″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Camera nerdery: The Fujis I had with me in Spain were the X100VI and the X-Pro3. The X100VI has a 23mm lens built-in and for the X-Pro3 I had an 18mm, 35mm and 50mm lens. The Fujis are less than full-frame sensors, however, so the lens equivalents in full frame would roughly be 35mm on the X100VI and 28mm, 50mm and 75mm for the interchangeable lenses. As I’m working these cameras into my kit, I’ve been taking the wider X100VI if I’m using the 70-200 on my Nikon, or I take the X-Pro3 with the short tele 50mm if I have the 17-35mm on my Nikon. That way I have a compact tele along if I’m primarily shooting wide, or a wide option if I’m carrying the 70-200. It’s much more compact than carrying two full-frame bodies, one with the 17-35 and one with the 70-200.

I do need to practice with the Fujis more, however. I should be doing that at home, when I’m between trips, but I’ve been bad about finding the time for it. Then, when I do pack them up for a work trip, I start out using them until I run into an unexpected issue, then I fall back on my Nikon gear until I have time to troubleshoot.

These Madrid days were nice to have, because I could shoot with little consequence. I’d been there before, shot there before, and it really didn’t matter if I came away with anything new. That said… I did run into some (probably) operator error issues.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”7314″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1792755970932{margin-top: -15px !important;}” text_direction=”default”]

Most of the images on this page were shot with the Fujifilm X100VI except for the last two which were shot with the X-Pro3 and a 50mm lens. The film simulations are something built into Fuji cameras that allow you to set color values and tones to mimic various films. Velvia, for instance. Or Astia. Acros for black and white. And so on.

Recipes, on the other hand, start with simulations and then involve other tweaks to the white balance, tone curves, grain emulation, etc. Recipes are a way to really dial-in your camera to get the look you want without bothering with a lot of post-processing on the computer. Recipes only apply to JPG files, however, so theoretically you can shot JPG plus RAW and get the best of both worlds: JPGs shot to your recipe AND a RAW file straight from the sensor with no processing for you to tweak in Photoshop or Lightroom.

This Madrid stop was my first time trying to shoot with recipes. I’d loaded them up in my cameras using Fuji’s X RAW Studio software after creating them on my laptop. With RAW files I can always go back in the software and apply different simulations and play with recipes – it’s just not immediate and in-camera.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”15″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”7875″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1792498149587{margin-top: -15px !important;}” text_direction=”default”]

Madrid’s Plaza Mayor with the Fujifilm X100VI and its built-in 23mm lens.

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”15″][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]So most of the images you’re seeing in this post are the results of my “failure” or, rather, the results of my lack of preparation. They are the jpeg files I captured without their RAW counterparts. I have processed each of these a bit, however, and am quite pleased to see how much I can still push a jpeg without seeing them fall apart. Granted I wasn’t doing any heroic recovery of highlights or lifting of shadows, but I was easily able to tweak color and contrast without wishing I had the RAW file.

I did continue to shoot quite a bit with the Fujis on this entire trip, although once the press trip portions began — if I was out on a tour, traveling light — I was taking my Nikon D850 and my 17-35mm zoom. That’s my old reliable, my tried and true. I know I won’t have any surprises there. But, when I had a bit of time on my own, I often took the Fujis out.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”7873″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1792498177603{margin-top: -15px !important;}” text_direction=”default”]

Madrid street scene shot with the Fujifilm X100VI and its built-in 23mm lens.

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”15″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]It seems funny to stress this much over a camera brand change when I could go the easy route and just shoot RAW all the time. One of the main benefits of the Fujifilm system, however, is the simulation and recipe opportunities. They really do allow you to create your own look without having to wait until later when you’re working at a computer. I like the idea of that, although I also find that I enjoy post-processing. There are sites built around showcasing and offering recipes of all styles. There are thousands of YouTube videos where people share their top 3 or top 10 recipes. It really is a lively community.

I’ll continue to share my progress and hopefully soon I’ll start having some recipes to share. The cameras really are beautiful and well made. The lens options (of which I’m sticking mainly with primes — no zooms) are lovely little gems. Because the cameras’ sensors are APS-C and smaller than full-frame sensors, the lenses can be smaller as well. Really, when cameras first went mirrorless, I felt that was the real benefit — that cameras could get smaller and lighter. But, when you make lenses faster, add autofocus, add stabilization, etc. nothing really seemed to change. But the rangefinder-style Fujis are smaller and have lots of pancake lens options available. It’s going to be a fun new world to explore.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”7870″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”
