Fujifilm Film Simulations and Recipes<\/h1>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n

Part 2: Options for creating recipes<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]This is Part Two of my overview of Fujifilm film simulations and recipes. You can find Part One on film simulations at this link<\/strong><\/a>. In this post we’ll move into the tools that Fuji makes available to create recipes based on their various simulations.<\/p>\n

This information is as much for my benefit as anyones. I’m a longtime Nikon user who is returning to Fuji after many decades. My last Fuji camera was a film body \u2014 I shot with both Fujica ST-701s and ST-901s many, many years ago. Dipping my toe back into the Fuji waters now that everything is digital has come with a learning curve.<\/p>\n

Film simulations and recipes are second nature to long-time Fujifilm users, of course. So, if you are one of them, feel free to pass over these initial posts. Or comment with clarifications if I got something wrong. I’m here to learn.<\/p>\n

Recipe Settings<\/h3>\n

I’ll begin by sharing this image of Reykjavik’s harbor, shot in RAW and set to the Reala Ace film simulation for a fairly natural color balance. As with all of these examples, drag the gold bar left and right to compare the two images. On the left is the base file and on the right is the image with the effect applied. In this case strong, large grain. Grain Effect<\/h3>\n

Starting with the Grain Effect, you have the options of “strong” or “weak” and “small” or “large”. I’m just showing “strong\/large” here because once it’s reduced for the website it’s not easy to see some of the more subtle variations.<\/p>\n

Since I’m applying the grain to the file essentially in-camera, it’s applied to the full-resolution image. When I scale the image down for the web, it becomes much more subtle. The addition of grain does make it look more like an image from film, but I’m not sure how often I’d use it.<\/p>\n

Back in the film days, I shot a lot of Velvia rated at ISO 40 because it had about the least amount of grain. I only used higher ISO films when I had no option (low light situations, etc.) because I was always trying to avoid grain. After all those years of trying to minimize grain, I’m not sure how often I’ll want to add it.<\/p>\n

Now, there are exceptions. There was a fast Agfa film I used to use with a warming filter when I purposefully wanted that warm, textured kind of an image. But you were locked in when shooting high-grain film — there was no removing it later. Color Chrome Effect<\/h3>\n

This effect is also offered in strong or weak variations but I’m showing only strong here to make the effect more obvious. This is not the best image to showcase the Color Chrome Effect, as it mostly affects the warmer colors. You can see a bit of darkening to the red stripes on the boat on the left. There is a separate Color Chrome FX Blue (that we’ll look at next) that tackles the blues that dominate this particular image.<\/p>\n

An analogy for Lightroom\/Photoshop users might be that Color Chrome Effect is similar to the saturation slider and the Blue version is similar to the vibrance slider. That’s over-simplifying a bit. This effect does seem to keep saturated colors pretty clean and not go too overboard. I’ve read that it may be decreasing luminance from highly-saturated colors to keep them from blowing out, but I’m not certain if that is what is happening. Maybe I’ll learn more as I experiment further.<\/p>\n

Update: As I’ve read more about this, I’ve learned that this is more about rescuing the highlights of individual channels. Color Chrome FX Blue<\/h3>\n

Again, just showing the “strong” version here. WB Shift<\/h3>\n

I’m skipping over a couple of settings here. One is the Smooth Skin Effect (mostly useful for portraits) and White Balance which I assume most photographers are already familiar with.<\/p>\n

You still choose your white balance as normal, but WB Shift lets you shift the colors further by choosing a small square on a color wheel grid. Your starting point is neutral in the center and you are defining the color shift based off of a red axis (left and right) and a blue axis (top to bottom). Moving down and right warms the image, moving up and left cools it.<\/p>\n

That’s 5 dots to the right, and 5 dots down from the neutral center.<\/p>\n

The simplest way to understand this grid system is to play with it in Fuji X RAW Studio. The image will preview the effect as you click on different squares so it’s easy to see what your finished effect will be.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, this could be one of the most dramatic tools in the recipe toolkit. Highlight Tone\/Shadow Tone<\/h3>\n

I’ll combine these two tools in one example but they do have separate controls. Basically the Highlight tone lets you brighten or darken highlights and the Shadow Tone control does the same with shadows. It’s another way to control contrast.<\/p>\n

The example here shows a highlight setting of Plus 2 for the highlights (Positive settings brighten highlights) and Minus 2 for the shadows (Negative settings lighten shadows). Clarity<\/h3>\n

Skipping over Sharpness and High ISO Noise Reduction because they aren’t really applicable to recipes across the board. Not everything shot with one recipe will necessarily need noise reduction and sharpening (in my opinion) should be done in post and not baked in. I find my X100VI to be so sharp that I shoot with a diffusion filter most of the time just to take that clinical edge off. I’m not sure when I’d need to sharpen a file from this camera.<\/p>\n

Clarity is a tough choice. From everything I read, it puts a real strain on the camera’s processor and can slow the write time of your file, lengthening the wait before you can take another shot. It’s also one of those tools that can easily be overused. Too much clarity can make an image really gritty. A high negative setting can add way too much glow. In moderation it can act as sharpening (in positive numbers) or softening (in negative numbers). Given the tradeoff of the slow write times, I imagine I’ll mostly use this as a post-processing effect and avoid it in-camera.<\/p>\n

Color Space and HDR<\/h3>\n

I won’t bother with examples of these two. I tend to shoot in Adobe RGB for the larger color space and would only make an HDR image in post, from multiple images. I suppose it’s handy to be able to create an HDR image in-camera but I’d rather have more control to tweak the settings and keep it from going overboard. Putting it all together<\/h3>\n

Now that we’ve gone through all the pieces, let’s look at some quick recipe examples. The first is a recipe based off of the Classic Chrome simulation, next is one based off of Nostalgic Neg, and third is a black and white recipe based off of Acros+R. I’ve included a screenshot of the pertinent settings in the X RAW Studio panel so that you can see what all has been affected in each. The images can be enlarged with a click for closer scrutiny as well.<\/p>\n

I think you can see that it’s possible to get much more differentiation from recipes than from film simulations themselves. These are not meant to be finished recipes. Much more testing would have to be done first to make sure the same settings worked reliable on multiple images.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container”
