here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\nGoing back to film days, there were some cameras that shot formats that were different from the 3:2 frame that we became used to in the 35mm world. Lots of medium format cameras shot square images and several shot wider formats. The Hasselblad X-Pan and Fujifilm TX cameras shot a single image the width of two standard 35mm frames side-by-side (65:24 I think?). I always found extremes more interesting than the middle ground. I like wide-angle and telephoto more than a normal 50mm view, and I like square and panoramic ratios more than the traditional 4:5 or 3:2 aspect ratios.<\/p>\n
Back to the 16:9 difference, here is a frame I shot with a Nikon D200 at the normal 3:2 ratio. It’s from the same trip to Chile that I’ll be sharing more Lumix photos from in this post. You’re composing a 16:9 view in the camera, during the creative process. You’re not thinking about how to crop it later.<\/p>\n
It’s similar to shooting with a prime lens as opposed to a zoom. You’ve already made one decision — this is the field of view I’m using right now — and you can focus your eye on how best to use that frame. Eliminating choices and options from your creative process can be freeing. Try going out to shoot with just a 24mm or just an 85mm sometime and see how your eye adapts as it learns that focal length. First, it was compact and quiet so I could always have it available, even in situations where the big DSLR might have been a little obtrusive (performances, for example). It was often the camera I would shoot with while in transit — in airports, from bus windows, in hotels before I had even unpacked my big gear. A lot of the images you’ll see from Chile and Easter Island here fit that mode. Many were “in transit” photos taken at hotels, airports or even on planes.<\/p>\n
These first two images are from my hotel in Santiago — one a view from an upper-floor window and the other looking up the elevator shaft atrium. They were probably shot right around my arrival time, possibly even before I’d unpacked my larger gear. I shot far more images with my DSLR while on Easter Island, but the LX1 was fun to have along for just the reasons I mentioned above. With its 16:9 format, it allowed me to look for images that took advantage of that more panoramic frame. Before flat screens came a long, our televisions were 4:3 format — almost square. Movies were typically wider, especially as systems like cinemascope came along, so we’ve been somewhat conditioned that wider images feel more cinematic. At least for my generation that remembers tube television sets. Unfortunately, the battery seems to have gone too long with no charge and is no longer viable. That, and I see that the camera is limited to using SD cards of 2GB and less and my smallest at the moment is 16GB. I guess trying out this aging camera will require a little online shopping. Then there is the question of whether the camera still works after replacing those two components.<\/p>\n
